Retribution - AD Introduction

This is an audio described introduction to Retribution. The introduction aims to provide additional details about visual aspects of the film, which there may not be time to include in the broadcast description.

Retribution is a Sky Original action thriller movie. The story revolves around Matt Turner, a top banking executive in Berlin’s financial district, who runs into trouble when a threat from an anonymous criminal puts his and his children’s lives in danger.

Matt, played by Liam Neeson, is a fit and active father-of-two who’s first seen working out with a punchbag. His mousy brown hair is wispy but not receded; his weathered face enlivened by piercing blue eyes. Matt’s married to Heather, played by Embeth Davidtz; a wiry-framed white woman with a bob of loose brown waves. Their relationship is under strain as they attempt to juggle family life and the pressures of work. Matt is high up in his company, a hedge fund called Nanite 7Capital, and responsible for securing multi-million Euro investments.

The Turners’ two children are Zach, who’s around 16 years old, and Emily, who’s two or three years younger. Both share their parents’ complexion; Zach with a short mop of thick waves; Emily wearing her long hair in a pony tail. They attend a typical Berlin school where uniforms are not required. Emily wears trendy wide-legged jeans and beaded bracelets; Zach dresses in a zip hoodie with a pair of orange headphones slung around his neck.

Much of the movie’s action takes place inside Matt’s car; a chunky grey Mercedes SUV. It accommodates the children comfortably but shows little sign of being used for this purpose – the luxurious dark leather interiors are spotlessly clean. A computerised dashboard panel affords the driver access to a full suite of entertainment options, as well as essential driving features.

As a turbulent morning takes Matt, Zach and Emily on a tour of Berlin, they encounter a small cast of key characters. Anders, played by Matthew Modine, has striking white hair, pale features and an arresting gaze. Like Matt, he’s a senior figure within the hedge fund. Another of their colleagues, Sylvain, is younger, with olive skin and a dark, stubbly beard. He’s heard speaking in French, and seen with a young woman who speaks Hungarian.

Finally, an Interpol investigator, Angela Brickman, is played by Noma Dumezweni. A slim black woman with a short-cropped, natural afro that’s tinged with grey, she has the calm and measured demeanour of an experienced professional, unphased by danger. 

Whilst the story place in Berlin, all of Retribution’s main characters speak English; the Turner family are American and Angela Brickman is British. A few short interactions in German are subtitled and will be voiced over in the audio described soundtrack.
