Pretty in Pink: A Journey Through Colour, Character, and Charm

Pretty in Pink: A Journey Through Colour, Character, and Charm
Creating the audio description for Pretty in Pink was both a nostalgic delight and a creative challenge. The film’s vivid 1980s aesthetic, from Andie and Duckie’s eclectic thrift-store fashion to the neutral, preppy looks of their peers, demanded careful attention. The real challenge lay in capturing the textures and tones of that colourful world without overwhelming the listener, while still leaving time to describe each thoughtfully chosen outfit in detail. For instance, Duckie’s flamboyant vintage electric blue suit at prom deserved a special mention.
One of the most rewarding parts was narrating the iconic scenes such as, Duckie’s dance to the song “Try a Little Tenderness” by Otis Redding. Describing his comical and over the top movements felt like narrating a dance of pure personality. Similarly, the prom scenes filled with longing glances and bold retro glam. The description had to convey that emotion without intruding on the music or dialogue.
What I also enjoyed and spent a lot of time on was figuring out how to show character through visuals. Andie’s handmade outfits say so much about who she is. Showcasing her creativity, individuality and her quiet rebellion against social norms. Describing those details helps listeners have a clearer idea of who she is.
I believe watching Pretty in Pink with audio description opens a new dimension of appreciation. I hope this audio description allows everyone to feel the magic of the 80s and the timeless message of being unapologetically yourself.
You can watch Pretty in Pink on Sky Cinema from 27th October. Audio Description by Tyra Cooper
