Cleaner - AD Introduction

Martin Campbell’s high octane thriller Cleaner stars Daisy Ridley as Joanna "Joey" Locke.

The story begins with Joey’s troubled upbringing in an abusive household, living in a modest, cluttered flat in West London’s striking Trellick Tower.

We are first introduced to her as a ten year old when she skilfully climbs across her family’s messy kitchen and out onto the windowsill to avoid listening to her father aggressively berating her younger brother Michael.

Now in her late 20s Joey is a former soldier turned window cleaner, who works at the Agnian Tower Sky scraper in London’s Canary Wharf.

Two middle aged brothers Geoffrey and Gerald Milton are at the helm of an energy company based in the tower.

A heartless, unpleasant pair, who are both in their 50s, played by Rufus Jones and Lee Boardman.

Joey's life takes a dramatic turn when an extreme Environmental Activist Group, Earth Revolution, hijacks an ‘Aztec themed’ shareholder gala hosted by Agnian Energy Company in their glass pyramid-topped skyscaper, which stands over 700 feet tall. The well heeled guests are dressed in tuxedos and ball gowns. The 50 story glass and steel One Canada Square, serves as the location.

The Activists, led by Marcus Blake who is in his late 50s, and played by Clive Owen, are keen to expose Agnian's hypocrisy regarding environmental exploitation. He and his cohorts take numerous VIPs, including the Milton brothers, hostage, recording their confessions of wrongdoing as part of their audacious plans.

Stuck on a window cleaning cradle, hundreds of feet up on the side of the skyscraper, Joey must find a way to alert the authorities, thwart the group’s plans and ultimately save everyone. This includes her Neurodivergent younger brother, Michael, who Joey has brought to work for the day. Inadvertently leading him into the midst of the hostage situation!

Joey, slim and athletic, with her dark brown pixie cut, is a resilient and skilled former soldier who left the military after an altercation with a misogynistic squad-mate. She faces the physical and mental challenges thrown at her, head on, with ingenuity and determination, often through gritted teeth.

Joey has taken her brother under her wing, after he was removed from his care home for hacking their records, exposing what he believed to be their foul play.

He’s a few years Joey’s junior. Tall, of average build with brown hair, he permanently clutches a replica of Thor’s hammer as a comfort item. Joey also comforts him at times with loving hugs.

The film’s intensity level soon rises as an extremist within the Activists’ ranks wants to bypass the original plans of exposing corruption and kill everybody in the building.

In a plot twist, this extremist is also familiar to Joey.

Find out how this thrilling drama unfolds when Cleaner premiers on Sky Cinema Premier on Friday the 2nd May 2025.
